SIMON’S SIX FUNDAMENTALS OF PUTTING

AIM

A consistent aim is the foundation to the initial starting direction of the ball. Identifying your individual eye-line and set-up position and optimal putter head alignment are the basis to good aim.
DIRECTION

The direction of the ball is determined by putter face alignment and the direction of the putter path at impact. The face angle is six times more influential to the starting direction of the ball compared to the path.
PATH GEOMETRY AND IMPACT SPOT

Whether the stroke is arced or straight the path of the putter should run parallel to the target direction through impact. Any arc should be a consequence of swinging the putter on a naturally tilted plane. The geometry of the path will also determine the resulting impact spot.
FACE ROTATION

Natural face rotation is a result of moving the putter on a tilted swing plane. The more tilted the plane is, the more the face will rotate relative to the target line. The putter is always square to the movement path if naturally moved back and forth.
LAUNCH

The launch angle and spin rate of the ball are determined by the effective loft applied to the ball and the rise angle of the putter through impact. Loft will contribute six times more to the resulting launch angle as compared with rise angle.
MOVEMENT DYNAMICS

Players are categorised into two stroke types: ‘swing’ strokes and ‘hit’ strokes. The ‘hit’ stroke will require more accurate movement timing as the speed of the putter changes rapidly at impact.

Testimonials

Don’t just take our word for it…

  • Thanks again for the wonderful service when I visited the Putt Lab. Have managed to play quite a bit since getting the new putter and my overall confidence on the greens continues to increase each time I play. Managed to break through the 40 barrier for 9 holes last Saturday with a 39 on the inner 9 at the Eastbourne Royal. I have recommended it to many friends already and plan to visit again just as soon as I get the chance.

  • Well what can I say, what an intense few hours and well worth the vist from Suffolk. The four of us booked three hours with Simon ( great guy) for a total review of our putters, grips and putting routines. We all have different handicaps (8 to 18) and age of putters, one of which was pre Falklands War and one a belly putter, it did’nt matter, as we all received our own very unique feedback on everything. We found that the technical support and information delvered by Simon was priceless and was put in to immediate effect straight afterwards on the practice putting green and followed by a round of golf. I would say to anyone, if you are serious about your golf then invest in some time on your putting. After all its the most used club in the bag. A memorable day.

  • First of all I’d like to thank you for the time you spent with me recently in order that I could be fitted for a new putter. The initial putter fitting session was not only fascinating in terms of the different variables looked at such as putter length, weight, lie and loft that you need to tailor to each individuals requirements. The true test of course is the outcome and I have to say that after the putter fitting and the additional putting lesson I received my performance on the course has improved dramatically. I’m now holing many more 6-8 footers and my whole confidence on the greens has increased dramatically to the point that the dreaded three putts now happens very rarely indeed. As we discussed, all too many times handicap golfers spend an inordinate amount of time getting their drivers and irons fitted for their game but all to often forget to spend the time focusing on, by far the most important club in their bag the putter. Once again thank you for spending the time with me at your Puttlab. Definitely the most valuable time spent in trying to improve my game.

  • So glad that I visited you.
Your detail and level of advice was excellent and has helped me beyond what I thought was possible…never realised that so much went into a simple putt, plus the putter is working really well, defiantly worth the investment.
    Kind Regards

  • Hello Simon
I came to see you a couple of weeks back and had a two hour session with you trying to sort out my putting stroke. The net result was a clear picture in my mind of why my putting was so variable and why I tended to miss so many really short putts.
Since then I have tinkered with my grip and putter selection based on what you showed me and suggested. The changes have resulted in several good scores in club matches (2 to 5 over par) and this weekend I shot level par 72 at Lamberhurst. Handicap cut to 5 – not bad at age 65 and I feel confident there will be more to come.
So thanks once more. After all these years playing I now understand what needs to be done and how to do it.
    Regards

  • Hi Simon
Just thought I’d drop you a line to say how pleased I am with the new putter. Only two rounds so far but already I can see significant improvement.
Putting with the line on the ball and lined up with the line on the putter just works. Also getting that consistent contact is really helping with distance. I feel it’s just a relaxed stroke now rather than a hit. I just adjust the length of the stroke for different distances and let it happen.
And of course the good putting leads to more confidence on the next tee.
All in all I’m delighted. Thank you again and I’ll recommend you whenever I get the chance.
    Best wishes,

    - James Ross -
